In this country, it is okay for a mother to pull her young daughter's pants down on a busy street corner, hold her bare bottom over a storm drain and let her daughter urinate through the grating.
However, it is not okay to smile at, make eye-contact with or in any way acknowledge the shared humanity of your grocery store cashier.
